Mattress Types & Firmness Guide
What do Pocket Sprung & Open Coil mean?
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses contain individual springs that are each enclosed in their own fabric pocket. Because the springs work independently, they can respond more individually to movement and body weight across the sleeping surface. Pocket counts vary between mattresses, and the overall level of support and comfort also depends on the mattress design, fillings and construction.
Benefits of a Pocket Sprung Mattress
At BedsDivans, we believe different mattress designs can suit different comfort preferences. One of the key benefits of a pocket sprung mattress is the independent movement of the springs, helping the mattress respond to each sleeper across the surface.
Open Coil Mattresses
Open coil mattresses use a connected spring system rather than individually pocketed springs. The coils are linked together to create a supportive spring unit and are designed to distribute body weight across the mattress.
- Open coil spring systems are generally lighter than individually pocketed spring systems.
- The connected coils help distribute weight across the sleeping surface.
- Open coil systems are commonly used in traditional and orthopaedic-style mattresses, with different spring tensions available to provide different levels of firmness and support.
Mattress Firmness – Explained
Extra Firm
An extra-firm mattress provides a more solid feel with less sink-in. It may suit sleepers who prefer stronger, more substantial support, although personal comfort preference is an important factor when choosing firmness.
Firm
A firm mattress provides a supportive feel with less cushioning and sink-in than a medium or soft mattress. It can be a good choice for sleepers who prefer a more supportive, stable sleeping surface.
Medium
A medium mattress offers a balance between cushioning and support and is a popular choice for sleepers who do not want a mattress that feels particularly hard or soft. Comfort can vary depending on body shape, sleeping position, personal preference and mattress construction.
Soft
A soft mattress provides a more cushioned feel and allows the sleeper to sink further into the comfort layers. It may suit sleepers who prefer a softer, more enveloping sleeping surface.
